P1 Back Then
"Munich, as God decreed at some point, is FC Bayern, Hofbräuhaus, Oktoberfest and P1."
The Haus der Kunst, saved from bombing raids in World War II by creative camouflage, was the only undamaged building from 1945 on and gave shelter to American officers and their parties. With the Officers' Club in the now renamed "Haus der Kunst", the building became an entertainment hotspot at Prinzregentenstraße 1. The Americans found the exotic street name too hard to pronounce, so they simply renamed it "Pee One", and the institution P1 was born! From then on, jazz concerts and dance nights were the order of the day. While the building's cultural spaces grew into one of the world's leading centers for contemporary art, one part always stayed reserved for food, drink and entertainment. When the Greek restaurateur Alecco took over in 1968, he impressed his guests with a life motto that still shapes P1 Club today:
"Being in is a passing phenomenon, being the best is an art."
The big breakthrough came when Michael Käfer took over in 1984 and made P1 the nightlife institution we know today. Its strict door policy came straight from urban New York nightlife and made P1 the most sought-after nightclub in Germany. Bartenders were no longer just service staff. From then on, they partied along with their guests. Munich's Schickeria finally had a home, and a new era had begun.
The stories around Mick Jagger, Whitney Houston, Milli Vanilli and Oliver Kahn are the stuff of legend. Anyone who wanted to belong had to be there, weeknight or weekend.
Often copied, never equaled. Through countless renovations, ambitious reinventions and changing concepts, we have stayed true to ourselves for more than 30 years, and there is a reason we are Germany's most successful nightclub.
